Our thoughts opinions and ramblings on the VoIP and GSM markets

Long Live Voice over IP

As we are a distributor of Voice over IP products we are obviously great believers in the technology but we are also aware that the technology is not currently suitable for all users.

esure home insurance have produced a survey of gadgets that users buy as the must have item but then soon ends up gathering dust in the cupboard and here is the result of the 2006 survey.

The top 10 most useless gadgets of 2006:

 1. Electric grill
 2. Coffee machine
 3. Sandwich toaster
 4. Juicer
 5. Electronic bathroom weighing scales
 6. Electric slow cooker
 7. Bread maker
 8. VOIP (Internet phones)
 9. Electric steamer
 10. De-humidifiers

The list is made up mainly of those useless kitchen gadgets that we all seem to end up buying but it is interesting to see that VOIP (Internet Phones) has made the top ten for the first time – the figures state something like 1 in 10 surveyed bought the handsets but over 50% stopped using them after a short while.

This shows that this technology for the domestic user has some way to go as most of them are tied to running an application on the computer and so making a call becomes a hassle, of course new handsets and other emerging technology will overcome this limitation. We know from experience that you cannot offer this type of solution to a Business user and that really VoIP must be an integral part of the solution so that the user has no real perception that they are using it and it is just part of the normal day to day operation.

So what have we been up to this month – as usual we have been working on some new features and we are also preparing for the Convergence Summit Show on 10th/11th October at Sandown Park, Surrey – come and see us there if you can as it is always good to meet you face to face. You can register Here. It promises to be a great show with a record number of pre-registered attendees.

We will be showing the new IP Gear VoIP gateways that we have told you about previously and the new Version 3.2 software for the MKC Networks 7000 CS SIP server that has a range of new features including improved ITSP support and a new conference feature called Quick Connect that is certainly very impressive.
